The Last Minute Shopper | Gift Guide for Men

I feel that with every passing year the Holidays becoming more hectic – more about the hustle, bustle & business of work & family obligations and less about time spent with friends & loved ones.  In an effort to help you cut down on your to-do list (and free up time for things you’d rather be doing) please take these tips and avoid as much unnecessary browsing as possible – with less than a week to go until the big day, it’s not likely you’ll have the time to spare!

Brown liquors have always been a Holiday favourite, and while a nice single malt may be appropriate for the more formal relations on your list, bourbon is definitely all the rage this year.  Like anything in life, there’s the kind of bourbon you can get for $3 a shot at your local dive bar and then there’s Woodford Reserve’s Master’s Collection.  Delicious & beautifully packaged, this elegant libation is a memorable & on-trend conversation starter.  – $129.95

Christian Dior Homme:  This timeless, classic cologne is one of my personal favourites.  Woody & masculine, it’s more of an underline than an exclamation mark.  Bonus: it’s light enough that it doesn’t set off my allergies – a big plus!  -$96.00

Nike+ FuelBand SE:  A fashionable workout accessory that avoids the backlash of a maybe-too-personal gift, the new & improved Fuel Band is perfect for those looking to jump-start New Year’s resolutions.  Improved calorie tracking and a new look – my love of rose gold knows no bounds.  -$169.99

The Right Gift Card:  As someone who’d like to move past the Christmas tradition of fake smiles & long returns lines, please consider the gift of choice this Holiday season.  No longer just for the extreme procrastinator, gift cards give you the freedom of knowing it’s always the right size.  My personal favourite: Shopping Centre gift cards which are valuable at multiple retailers.  With Boxing Day right around the corner, it’s not like they’ll need an excuse to go to the mall.

Christian Thompson | Christian ConfidentialAs Toronto bundles up for a season of crisp winter weather, one thing I’ve noticed is the growing popularity of stylish varsity jackets.  This particular jacket from Canada’s Krane Design continues their tradition of high-quality construction and luxe-finishes, giving nuance and restraint to an otherwise high-spirited item.  While the varsity look will always be classically cool, buying a little up-market will ensure that your investment matures alongside the rest of your wardrobe and will keep you from looking a little too-juvenile at that next event.

I sat down with friend and recording artist Fefe Dobson at “The Fifth Cafe” in downtown Toronto to catch up what’s going on in her life. We talked about movies, relationships and her new music project “Fire Bird” which features the super catchy single Legacy. Watch the interview along with her music video Legacy here :)

Jabra-Trio-Colours-Solemate-RESIZE2

This little gadget has been bringing an outsized bit of joy into my life lately.  I’ve only had it for about two weeks but I can honestly say I’ve used it every day since I opened the box – it works well for me because it’s super light and very user friendly.  I’m a bit of a wait-and-see guy when it comes to technology and my friends always bug me for being a slow-adaptor – when I say it’s easy to use, trust me.  The sound quality is top-of-the-line and with about eight hours of battery life it keeps me going from the gym to my desk to getting ready for a night out without running out of juice.  Even though it’s only the beginning of winter this thing has me excited about cottage nights, romantic picnics on the island, or laying by the pool … so many daydreams on these cold winter nights :P!  If you’re looking for a cool holiday gift I’d recommend trying this bad boy out! A few more pics down below!

 XO,

Christian

Casual Days | Street StyleWe all have those busy, errand-filled days where our outfit choices become less of a priority.  With the Holiday Season upon us, those days have been happening a bit more often than I’d like, so much that I decided to dedicate a post to it!  I definitely have my go-to casual pieces for those days when my mind is all over the place, things that I can throw together and know I still look stylish enough to be seen out and about.

Casual Days | Street StyleThis time of year it’s all about the sweater – this piece from Charlie Bymz is always a favourite because of its classic athletic cut.  The white calls for a bit more attention – I’d be lying if I said I minded.

5 Questions with John Varvatos | Interview

John Varvatos | Christian ConfidentialI recently had the opportunity to sit down with the ultra-talented John Varvatos at his label’s first flagship store in Canada.  It was such a thrill – he was extremely charming and incredibly down to earth, an uncommon balance in someone so tremendously accomplished.  He was in Canada celebrating two things, firstly the launch of his new store, and secondly, the release of his new book ‘Rock In Fashion’ which we spoke about here:

John Varvatos | Christian ConfidentialThis is both the first John Varvatos store in Canada and the release of your first book, how are you feeling right now?

I haven’t really thought about it too much – I’ve been running around so much – it’s just very exciting.  I grew up in Detroit and I’ve spent a lot of time in Canada.  I dated someone while in College in Toronto for four years, I’ve been here a lot.  I have an affinity to Toronto and I think that for North America this city, along with New York and LA, is very cosmopolitan.  Even more  than LA actually –  it’s more global, more international.

John Varvatos | Christian ConfidentialHonestly, when I found out that you were working on a book I didn’t understand your motivation.  What’s the message that you’re trying to leave with us by releasing ‘Rock In Fashion’?

The end message really is that fashion and rock and roll are totally intertwined, they’re totally incestuous.  It started back in the 50s and it’s a relationship that’s just continued to evolve.  As you go through the book it shows you that what goes around comes around.  Young artists have taken cues from their influencers and made them their own, which is great, but the initial influence is still there – when you flip through the book you see some of the juxtaposition.  You really can see it!

John Varvatos | Christian Confidential What’s the one chapter in your book that best reflects the relationship you see between rock and your fashion?

The section on tailoring really gets to the root of what I do.  It’s everything –  I had to narrow it from 200 images to 25.  It was like tearing my heart out.

John Varvatos | Christian ConfidentialAt the start of ‘Rock in Fashion’ you have an image of one of your collaborations with Converse – the model is wearing a shirt that says ‘Who the hell is John Varvatos?” – If you could answer in five words, what would you say?

Passionate, focussed, warm, friendly, and bald.  If I could add a word, it would be humorous!

John Varvatos | Christian ConfidentialLast but not least, if we were at the gym and our iPods were switched, what’s the one artist that I’d be surprised to find on it?

You might find one artist named Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King – that would be something people would not expect me to be listening to!

The Winter Athlete | Street Style

The Winter Athlete | Street StyleAs much as I enjoy it, outdoor running is a season pursuit.  This time last year I had definitely fled the elements and let mother nature reclaim the streets.  That’s changed (for now, anyway) thanks to Nike’s Flash Pack collection.  With an emphasis on comfortable warmth and heightened visibility they have made early winter runs something that I can actually look forward to.  The Nike 5.0 + Shield kicks are more than just a beautiful pair of shoes – super light and form fitting I can’t imagine leaving these at home any time soon.

The Winter Athlete | Street Style

The Winter Athlete | Street StyleThe staple piece in this collection is definitely the Nike Shield jacket – something you truly have to wear to appreciate.  Ultra lightweight and perfectly temperate, I couldn’t be happier with how it kept me warm and dry throughout my run.  The vibrant colours are both eye-catching and are also your best friend when it comes to staying safe on a dark street!  Anyone who knows me personally will know that I’m not a fan of the cold – this piece has definitely changed my mind and expanded my winter workout regime.  If you’re in the market for some high-quality outdoor winter workout gear this winter, I highly recommend giving this collection a test run!

Surprisingly, dressing up is one of my least favourite things to do.  I’ve never been one of those ‘alls fair in the name of fashion’ types and generally dress for comfort more than flare.  That said, there are many occasions where dress-clothes are a must!

I might not be able to get away from the indigo-jeans, but in this outfit I’ve paired them with a double-breasted vest & blazer.  In it I feel fashionable, flexible & fun.  The detailing on the blazer makes a statement without defining the look.  It’s a subtle style that suits the season with colours to match.

The vest is definitely a highlight & the key to this outfit’s versatility.  Take it from office to afterwork effortlessly.
