If you’ve been following @ChristianConfidential via social media you may have noticed that my team and I have been working on a special project with Nike Canada to promote their latest #BETRUE initiative.
#BETRUE is a capsule collection inspired by the LGBT community and celebrates the passion and pursuit of sports by all athletes. The brand helped fund the LGBT Sports Coalition and continues to provide it with support through the #BETRUE collection.
#BeTrue is a movement that I’m very proud to endorse as it promotes both positivity and equality in sports and in life in general. With the help of Nike Canada, the Christian Confidential team put together a digital campaign that features three awesome guys and myself who are all from different walks of life that come together for our love of athletics, in this case running. With that being said, I think it’s time for you all to meet the guys!
Meet my friend Nykeem Provo. He’s an up and coming actor and an all around great guy! We met a few years ago at Soho House Toronto and connected instantly over our interest in the arts & entertainment. Nykeem’s favourite sports include basketball, soccer and running. ” I support equality everywhere, but especially in sports. That’s solely due to the fact that no matter what a persons sexual preference is, it doesn’t make them less human. Straight, gay, asexual, we’re all one! – N.Provo
Favourite athlete & why: My favourite athlete is Kobe Bryant. His talent is undeniable and his work ethic is relentless.
Favourite music to work out to: As weird as this may sound, my favourite music to listen to while working out is classical. – More specifically, Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber
While growing up, sports and athletics have always played an integral role in my life. I honestly couldn’t picture what I would be like without athletics, whether it be earning the running back position in football, playing the middle position in volleyball or going to Ofsaa in high school for triple jump. Sports have helped shape the person that I am today. It builds character, discipline and grace – all traits that are just as useful on and off the field. I stand behind the ideas of the #BETRUE initiative as I believe promoting equality in sports and life all together is important. No one should be discriminated based on their sexual preference or discouraged from playing their favourite sport. I wear this shirt with confidence & pride and encourage you all to #BETRUE.
Favourite athlete & why: I would have to agree with Nykeem and say Kobe Bryant. He’s been in the game for a long time and doesn’t show any sign of slowing down.
Favourite music to work out to: Hip hop and Trap music always help keep me going when I’m ready to give up.
What does “Being True” mean to you: “Being True” to me, means being as honest as you possibly can with yourself about who you truly are. For some people it’s more difficult than others but when you’re capable of accepting and embracing your core, the good and the bad, it’s truly a beautiful thing.
Get a glimpse into the speed training session that Nykeem, Christian, Daniel & Benjamin participated in to showcase how discrimination based on sexual preference has no place in the realm sports and athletics. #BETRUE #NikeRunning #ChristianConfidential
Meet my friend and Christian Confidential contributor, Daniel Hundertmark. He works in social media and is also a model based in Toronto, Canada. I was introduced to Daniel by a really close friend of mine and originally connected over our passion for fitness and health. His favourite sports include football, basketball and running. “I support equality within sports because it’s the 21st century and this shouldn’t even be an issue at this point. Whatever an individual’s sexual preference is does not make them less competent than someone that identifies as heterosexual.“ – D.Hundertmark
Favourite athlete & why: My favourite athlete is Connor McDavid. I admire him for his commitment to physical fitness, nutrition, and his willingness to share his knowledge with others on and off the ice.
Favourite music to work out: Trap music is my go-to, when it comes to working out!
What does “Being True” mean to you: “Being True” to me, means not having to put up a façade in order to impress the people around you. “Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.” – Nelson Mandela
Meet my friend Benjamin Fraser, he’s a recent marketing graduate, a social media influencer for IN Magazine and one of the nicest ‘cool’ guys you’ll ever meet! We both grew up in Ottawa and made our way to Toronto. We connected over our love of fashion and street style and have been friends ever since. Ben’s favourite sports are snowboarding, running and cross training. “I support equality in sports because it can seen as the ultimate equalizer. I think it gives people the opportunity to be seen for their talent and dedication rather than their sexuality.” – B.Fraser
Favourite athlete & why: I can think of a few professional athletes that I admire but my favourite athletes have to be the ones that I interact with on a regular basis – either through run club or cross training. They are the ones that truly inspire me to push harder and reach new fitness goals.
Favourite music to work out to: Cyril Hahn and Kaytranada always keep me going!
What does “Being True” mean to you: “Being True” to me, means knowing and understanding yourself and drawing confidence from that. It brings me a lot of happiness and pride to be able to say that I work with brands like Nike that show their acceptance and support by promoting campaigns like this! It’s a huge step forward and I’m proud to be apart of it.
I would like to say thank you to all of those that followed along and engaged with us during this two day digital project. I hope that we were able to shed some light and raise awareness to the movement of inclusion, equality and positivity within sports and athletics. This is a subject matter that means a lot to me and if even only one person read this post and felt empowered or encouraged to not let ignorance get in the way of them participating in sports, I would consider this a huge success. Be the the change that you want to see, always #BETRUE
